The biggest problem is, most ads are “looking for farm help, no days off, 16 hour days, must have 1A, must be able to operate all equipment, must be red seal mechanic and welder, must have MD doctorate, must have masters in engineering. Starting wage $15/hr”

I like the local farmer here, he has a 7800 square foot lake house, 3 of the biggest new sea doos, the boat to match, $400,000 worth of new vehicles in his driveway, a beautiful farm home, farms 11,000 acres, mostly owned, but doesn't want to pay enough for yearly salary full time to even max out cpp.

Problem with most farms loosing help is wages. Owners think what is fair really isn’t. $20-25 a hour doesn’t cut it. I pay my kids $30 per hour just to keep them on the farm. They are great operators and maintain equipment. People tend to forget the cheapest labor costs you the most money

I’ve tried everything. I even tried posting an ad for a grain cart driver recently for this upcoming harvest will pay 40$/hour plus meals and housing to simply sit in a tractor for three to four weeks straight and make over 10K in that time and I never even had one person take me up on that. Thinking about just giving up completely and accepting the fact that we will just have to work harder being understaffed. Not ideal but in today’s world guess it’s reality

notice he didn't say what the competitive wage is.... not even a range. if everyone he knows is looking, and so is he, maybe the wage is competitive with the neighbors but not the expectations

Pay overtime and watch people flock to your farm. I spent a decade working as a farmhand for two different farmers. One was distant family, they helped me pay to get me semi license, offered to help me get my pilot’s license, and gave me yearly raises. The only reason I’m not still working for them is because I value our familial relationship more than our employment relationship and the familial one was getting stressed. My second job, I got one raise in 5 years, got in trouble if I only worked 45 hours in a week in the middle of winter, and was offered zero opportunities to advance in the company. I quit farming and went to town as an apprentice electrician. On an industrial unionized job site I was making more per month working 14 on 7 off, making $7 LESS per hour. The difference that overtime pay after 40 hours in a week makes is unbelievable. We have enough unemployed people in Saskatchewan who could be trained to run your equipment. Either hire two to three shifts to keep your equipment running 24/7, or offer to pay your guys overtime after 50 hours a week. You won’t have any issues getting smart, trainable kids if you do that.

I worked for a guy, I was the guy you were looking for ran all the equipment managed the bailing crew in the fall did all the mechanic work, planting, combining, spraying, and finding labor. had plans of going to a diesel mechanic school and was enrolled in night school agronomy.
all I asked for to stick around for the next 20 years was a opportunity/helping hand to Farm a quarter or two of family owned land on my own.
got told no, im 6 years into a "in town" job and haven't looked back.
it's hard to compete with $30 per hour plus benefits in town.
