Gullah here from NC and SC. Indigo fingers is what they were referred to as and they normally were a just the finger tips stained from working on indigo plantations. These patterns created aren’t “traditional” but the beautiful thing about culture is that it evolves. Gullah Geechee people are VERY heavy on our connection to West Africa so incorporating things from “other cultures” (West and Central Africa, and sometimes Seminole if they’re Floridian) is fine because it is a representation of our values and heritage as a people in terms of painting the circles on hands. Circles also have deep meaning in gullah geechee culture because we are west african descendants, who also use the dots/circles as well.

I think I'm misunderstanding myself. Does Elukami absolutely have to use indigo? I feel like I recall in the earlier concept videos that other colors were chosen, such as white for cotton and brown for tobacco? Am I misremembering this?

The indigo fingers and indigo circle have very big significance in the Gullah geechee culture. From my knowledge it was just a tad bit more modern style that was adapted from the west African styles and patterns and as the years went by it became that along with the significance of harvesting this indigo plant itself. It’s still pretty close as the Gullah geechee ppl of today still have pretty close roots to the ancestors and their practices!

I heavily agree with you but and if people are looking to extend the stain then I suggest mixing indigo with Henna or jagua but it won't work if indigo isn't used.
