I think that is the point people often misunderstand. No one is arguing that slavery was a positive thing; most acknowledge that it was a horrific institution that caused immense suffering. However, the issue of reparations is complicated because current generations did not have the power to stop what happened in the past. Since we cannot travel back in time, we should also acknowledge how much society has evolved since then.
