Yea as an italian i can confirm, i usually try to speak italian w ppl who are learning it as much as possible, when i switch to english its cuz they either didn’t understand smth i said or cuz i can’t understand their italian due to the accent if its very thick (hand gestures help a lot btw, that’s why we use them so much)

Genuinely feels like the easiest way to practice your Dutch is to first learn an additional unrelated 3rd language like Portuguese or some shi idk, and then pretend to only speak that and have no English at all
