What I loved most about the film was the way they showed us Aang's shock at losing his entire nation. We had been overlooking it because he was always smiling and moving forward without stopping. He didn't allow us or anyone else to see his vulnerability, but the film showed us the extent of Aang's psychological devastation. He lost his entire nation, everyone he loved, he lost everything, and he realized that his escape, which he thought had caused his nation's destruction, was what saved him from death. I felt so much pain for him.

Aangs trauma was awful. He returned to nothing. And yet people say others trauma has to be downplayed to shine his trauma. Korra and Sokka witnessing the destruction of their people and culture and then their father abandoning them.

This actually happens btw. Entire ethnic groups die out because of colonization, genocide, etc. It happened in my family too. My great grandmother’s language no longer exists. And the same happened on the other side of my family. The fire nation is such a good example of colonialism and imperialism. Because it is based upon imperialist Japan
