The IAR-99 is Romania’s only indigenous jet aircraft to enter serial production after the Cold War era. Designed in the 1970s and built by Avioane Craiova, it serves primarily as an advanced jet trainer while also being capable of light attack and close air support missions. It remains an important part of the Romanian Air Force’s pilot training pipeline. Development The aircraft was developed to replace the aging Czech-built L-29 Delfín and L-39 Albatros trainers used by Romania. * Development began in the 1970s. * First flight: 21 December 1985. * Entered Romanian Air Force service in 1988. * It was the first jet aircraft designed and built entirely in Romania. Specifications * Crew: 2 (student and instructor in tandem) * Engine: Rolls-Royce Viper Mk 632-41 turbojet (built under license in Romania) * Maximum speed: about 865 km/h (537 mph) * Range: about 1,100 km * Service ceiling: about 12,900 m (42,300 ft) * Configuration: Low-wing, all-metal, tricycle landing gear, Martin-Baker-derived ejection seats. Variants The best-known versions are: * IAR-99 Standard – the original trainer. * IAR-99 Șoim (“Hawk”) – upgraded with modern avionics developed with Elbit Systems, including a HUD, HOTAS controls, GPS/INS navigation, and simulated radar capabilities for fighter training. * IAR-99 SM (Standard Modernizat) – the latest modernization program, intended to prepare Romanian pilots transitioning to the F-16 Fighting Falcon with avionics and training systems more closely aligned with modern NATO aircraft. Flight testing of the first SM aircraft began in 2023. Weapons Although primarily a trainer, the IAR-99 can carry: * Unguided rockets * Bombs * Gun pods * Air-to-air training missiles * Reconnaissance pods Its combat capability is intended mainly for light attack and training rather than front-line air superiority missions. Current role Today, the IAR-99 is used to: * Train future fighter pilots. * Bridge the gap between basic trainers and the F-16. * Conduct limited close air support and reconnaissance missions. * Preserve Romania’s domestic aerospace design and manufacturing expertise. The Romanian Air Force currently operates both legacy IAR-99 aircraft and upgraded examples, with the modernization program aiming to keep the type relevant while Romania transitions toward a force built around the F-16 and, eventually, the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II.
