@briefhisteria: The Vietnamese Boat People:The Untold Journey. After the fall of Saigon, thousands of Vietnamese Boat People fled Vietnam, escaping war and persecution across the South China Sea. Many reached Malaysia, where Malaysian efforts and Pulau Bidong offered refuge before resettlement in America and beyond. Their remarkable Diaspora transformed tragedy into hope, creating new generations whose lives began with one desperate journey by sea. #vietnam #vietnamese #diaspora #malaysia #History
My family was one of these people that left Vietnam in 1979 when I was barely just a few months. We traveled for 2 weeks out in open waters until we got picked up by a Dutch merchant ship. Taken to Malaysia where my grandmother found us and flown to the US. We settled in San Francisco and then down to Orange County, Ca.

I am of the Boat People tribe. 1982…I was one of the lucky ones to have made it all the way to the USA in 1984. Out of Vietnam to Malaysia and then through the islands then onto Bataan Philippine refugee camp.

Yep. I was 3 years old and still remembered everything. My family survived and ended up in refugee camp in China. Then was lucky to be sponsored us to Canada.

As a Vietnamese boat person, I am indebted and filled with gratitude for the countries of Malaysia and the United States of America. For that reason, I implore that we, the once-boat people, pay it forward to other citizens of the world who are legally or illegally entering the USA to seek refuge. Please do not forget where we came from, who we were, and how we got here in the U.S.A. Imagine if Malaysia (or Thailand, or Indonesia, etc.) had implemented laws similar to what the USA is currently doing with ICE regarding illegal immigrants, where would we, as boat people, be? I agreed there are always rotten apples in every basket which need to be removed, but to indiscriminately execute immigration law by expelling every illegal person without due process is inhumane.
