The Lituya Bay tsunami is one of the most powerful natural disasters ever recorded. On July 9, 1958, a giant wave reached a height of approximately 1,720 feet (524 meters), making it the tallest tsunami ever documented. Perhaps the most surprising fact is that, despite being the largest tsunami ever recorded, the disaster claimed only two lives. Because it struck a remote wilderness area rather than a populated coastline, the human toll was remarkably low. Had the same event occurred near a major city, it could have become one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern history. Unlike most tsunamis, which are caused by movements of the ocean floor and can travel across entire oceans, the Lituya Bay tsunami was created by a massive landslide crashing directly into a confined bay. This concentrated an enormous amount of energy into a single wave and produced a height that has never been matched in recorded history. More than sixty years later, the Lituya Bay tsunami remains the tallest wave ever recorded and one of the clearest examples of nature’s raw power. Its combination of a major earthquake, a massive landslide, and a remote location created an event that was both terrifying and unique—an event that could have had far worse consequences if it had happened anywhere near a large population center.
