But one simple question led to an unexpected moment. 「どこから来ましたか？」 「フィリピンから来ました。」 “Where are you from?” “We’re from the Philippines.” そして仕事について聞いてみると、それぞれ違う答えが返ってきた。 Then I asked what kind of work they do, and each had a different answer. 「ホテルの仕事です。」 “Hotel work.” 「枕、シーツ、タオルを担当しています。」 “I handle pillows, sheets, and towels.” 「バスローブやタオルです。」 “I work with bathrobes and towels.” 同じホテルでも、担当する仕事はこんなに違う。 Even in the same industry, everyone’s role is different. そして次の質問で、思わず笑ってしまった。 Then came a question that made everyone laugh. 「日本にはどれくらい住んでいますか？」 “How long have you lived in Japan?” 「4ヶ月くらい。」 “About four months.” ところが、一人が答えを間違えてしまう。 But one of them accidentally answered the wrong question. 「4ヶ月くらい日本語住んでいます。」 “I’ve Japanese live four months.” すぐに自分で気づいて笑顔に。 And then he immediately caught his own mistake. 「あ、日本で住んでいます。」 “Oh, I mean I’ve lived in Japan.” 完璧じゃなくてもいい。 間違えたら、自分で直せばいい。 その積み重ねが、本当の日本語になっていく。 You don’t have to be perfect. If you make a mistake, just correct yourself.
