Listed as a Historic Monument in 1900, the Palais de l'Île, often described as a "ship-shaped house," has served as a prison, courthouse, and administrative center. It is a remarkable historic building, with its oldest sections dating back to the 12th century.
Originally built as a simple fortified rectangular house, it occasionally housed the prison and the mint of the Counts of Geneva. Today, the Palais de l'Île is recognized as one of the most distinctive medieval monuments in the region. It stands on a natural rocky island in the middle of the Thiou River.
The fortified house is first mentioned in 1325 as a prison, when the castellan of Annecy paid Jean de Monthoux, Lord of the Island, for the upkeep of two prisoners.
In 1355, Count Amadeus III of Geneva received from Emperor Charles IV of the Holy Roman Empire the right to mint gold and silver coins within his territories. Construction work transformed part of the building into a mint, which remained in operation until the end of the 14th century. After the House of Geneva died out and Annecy and the Genevois region became part of the Duchy of Savoy, Duke Amadeus VIII granted the property as a fief to the Monthoux family.
By the end of the 16th century, the building had become the seat of the local court and came to be known as the Palais de Justice de l'Île (Island Courthouse).
From the 18th century onward, the building was used primarily for administrative purposes while continuing to function as the town's main prison until 1864. A new jail was then constructed elsewhere, although it has since been demolished. Between 1865 and 1880, the Palais de l'Île served as a home for the elderly.
At one point, Annecy's municipal council considered demolishing the building to make way for public baths, but the proposal was ultimately abandoned. The building was subsequently used as a drawing school for stonemasons and carpenters, as a gymnasium, and as temporary accommodation.
The novelist André Theuriet and Charles Suisse, an inspector of Historic Monuments, strongly opposed the demolition plans.
