@yerte3: The Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople was one of the most important religious and architectural marvels of the Byzantine Empire. Originally founded in the 4th century by Constantine the Great to serve as his burial place alongside the relics of the apostles, it was completely rebuilt by Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century into a magnificent, five-domed cruciform (cross-shaped) masterpiece that later inspired the design of Venice's St. Mark's Basilica. For over seven centuries, the church functioned as the grand imperial mausoleum, housing the tombs of decades of Byzantine rulers and patriarchs. However, its splendor was permanently shattered in 1204 when Western Crusaders brutally plundered its wealth and desecrated its royal tombs during the Fourth Crusade. Following the Ottoman conquest of the city in 1453, the structural integrity of the church was heavily compromised, and in 1461, Sultan Mehmed II ordered its demolition to clear ground for the Fatih Mosque, which still stands on the site today. #orthodox #christian #byzantine #constantine #church
