They worry that once it starts operating, increased demand for water and electricity could become a burden on the community. As of June 2026, Johor has 65 data centre projects operating, under construction or planned. A single data centre can consume twice the electricity used by a city of 300,000 people, and about one-third of the water used by a city of the same size. Authorities say future projects will only be approved if they are more water- and energy-efficient.
