This Gbajabiamila issue has made me to remember Hadi Sirika's case. Two days before Buhari's exit from office, one of the biggest scams happened under Buhari's watch. Whether the Minister of Aviation wanted to impress Buhari or simply wanted Nigerians to believe that the Buhari administration had performed excellently, only he can answer that. Hadi Sirika as Aviation Minister went ahead and chartered an aircraft belonging to Ethiopian Airlines. The aircraft was temporarily painted in Nigeria Air colours and placed on a three-day static display. Then Nigerians were told that Nigeria Airline had finally been launched. The entire Buhari cabinet, including President Buhari himself, gathered at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport on the 27th of May for the grand unveiling. It looked historic. It looked convincing. It looked like Nigeria had finally joined the league of countries with a national carrier once again. But the celebration did not last long. Immediately after Buhari handed over power on May 29, the Nigeria Air branding was removed from the aircraft, and the same jet quietly flew back to Addis Ababa. That was when the shocking truth began to unfold. It was later investigated by EFCC, and they discovered that the aircraft unveiled on the tarmac did not belong to Nigeria Air at all. It was simply a chartered aircraft belonging to Ethiopian Airlines. Hadi Sirika had fooled the whole nation to believe that Nigeria now had a national airline when, in reality, there was none. As if that was not enough, he was later accused of even bigger scams, including allegedly using verbal directives to award contracts. Among them were a ₦299 million consultancy contract awarded to Tianaero Nigeria Limited, a company registered barely a year before the award, and a later ₦599 million contract extension, all without competitive bidding. For a very long time, I have always believed that the Nigeria Air story was one of the greatest scams ever carried out by any government. But with the Femi Gbajabiamila and Adeniyi Adeyemi case unfolding before our eyes, I am now tempted to think otherwise.
