The rain represented incompatibility between robin and ted notice how ted made it rain for robin when she was going to that work trip with sandy? and how they kissed for the first time in fully wet clothes because of the rain? when ted helped robin to find the locket and it started raining? but it never would’ve worked. robin’s commitment issues, ted and his awaited plans of forming a family, robin’s desire to explore the world… so, tracy appears. it was raining in farhampton’s station the night they met and it was from tracy’s yellow umbrella from which ted took shelter, and ended up finding the love of his life. ted finally married the perfect woman for him, had the kids he had been dreaming of and pretty much got everything he had always wished for. however, just as good things take their time, it all must eventually come to an end. people don’t seem to understand that the show’s intention was not to give us the happy ending but a realistic one, which is rarely seen on tv. when ted has his kids’ blessing, he goes to robin’s apartment and we can see that the pavement is wet but it’s not raining meaning they both have achieved their life goals, they are both in different chapters of their lives, willing to start a new one. there isn’t really a reason why they can’t be happy together, fulfilling like this, the promise they made with each other years ago
