M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) is not merely a name, he is a symbol of selfless service, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the people. His life and leadership were built upon the principle of giving back to society and uplifting those in need. As a lifelong admirer and follower of MGR, I have always sought to embrace these same values in my own journey of public service to the people of Penang. Across Penang, many non-governmental organisations continue to play a vital role in serving communities and supporting those who require assistance. One such organisation is Persatuan Kebajikan Ayirathil Oruvan Ithayakkanu MGR Pulau Pinang, led by Mr. MGR Kumar, a devoted follower of MGR whose passion for community service mirrors the ideals we both cherish. Through a recycling centre in Bukit Mertajam, Mr. Kumar has transformed environmental sustainability into a meaningful social initiative. The proceeds generated from the recycling activities are channelled towards providing free education programmes and computer classes for B40 students, ensuring that underprivileged children are given opportunities to learn, grow, and build a brighter future. Several months ago, Mr. Kumar approached me regarding a number of challenges faced by the organisation. Recognising the noble work being carried out, I felt it was my responsibility, as the EXCO for Housing and Environment of the Penang State Government, to extend my support wherever possible. Firstly, I contributed RM10,000 towards the upgrading and improvement of the recycling centre to ensure that its operations can continue more effectively and sustainably. Secondly, understanding that the computers and desktop units used by the students were old and no longer in good condition, I contributed 20 laptop units to support the free computer and digital literacy classes. In today's rapidly evolving world, access to technology is essential, and every child deserves the opportunity to acquire digital skills regardless of their financial background. In addition, I was informed that the organisation operates from a rented premises. To help ease its financial burden and allow it to focus more resources on serving the community, I also decided to sponsor the monthly rental of RM1,500. I firmly believe that leadership is not measured by titles or positions, but by our willingness to serve and uplift others. Whenever there is an opportunity to support initiatives that create positive change in society, we must do our utmost to contribute. This is why the values that guide my service have always been closely aligned with the legacy of MGR, a commitment to serving the people, empowering communities, and ensuring that no one is left behind. Together, let us continue building a more caring, inclusive, and compassionate society where service to the people remains our highest priority. #YBDSR #PeraiKita #Penang2030 #MalaysiaMadani #ForYourPage
