Built-in bathroom niche using leftover materials - here’s exactly how we did it! We had zero storage planned for this bathroom (classic me not thinking ahead), so we had to rip the wall off after first fix plumbing to add these niches, but it was 100% worth it. Even better, they cost us nothing extra as we used scrap timber and leftover tile boards 🙌 The tiles we used are the Tan-Tan in Adobe from @Claybrook Studio UK (AD – kindly discounted), and I love the soft, rustic texture they’re perfect for adding a bit of warmth and character to the space. If you’re thinking of adding a niche too, here’s a breakdown of what we did: 🪚 Framing - We used leftover 2x4 timber to build the boxes, sized using our biggest bottle plus extra space for backer board and tiles. We went with two squares because of a noggin we didn’t fancy moving. 🧱 Boarding - Covered the whole niche with No More Ply tile backer boards. Glued the backboard on to avoid screws poking through the other side. I also used the glue as a waterproofing filler along all of the joints. 💧 Waterproofing - As this isn't a wet room & main use is a freestanding bath, I didn't fully waterproof with tanking, if your looking for full waterproofing of a wet room please don't follow this! 🔪 Tiling - I mitred all the edges with a wet cutter (you can tilt the blade to get the 45° angle). Definitely the fiddliest part - if you’re attempting this, I’d allow at least a day per niche. Lining things up took ages but I’m glad I didn’t rush it. 🧽 Grouting - Once it was all set, I grouted the whole area in one go to keep the finish consistent and help the niche blend in. It’s not perfect, but I’m so proud of how it turned out. A little DIY win, and a huge lesson in the importance of planning ahead 😅 Thinking of doing something similar?
