Honestly, one of my FAVORITE artists is a man. I have two artists that I actively go back to, one is a woman and one is a man! But there’s also another man is that woman’s shop and he seemed great. I don’t personally vibe with his art style but he was a great guy and he was always checking in with his client and confirming placement etc when he had an appt next to me

Totally valid to say just get vetted as the best answer. 👏 But I could also see how this take could give “not all men” vibes. 🥴 Every bad tattoo *experience* I’ve had has been at the hands of a cis man. Incl once when ALL the men in the shop laughed along or stayed silent. I won’t go to one again.

I used to get tattoo’d stricly by male tattoo artists, but when I stitched to female artists I realized how belittled I was made to feel. I feel way more supported and safe by female artists. Of course there are bad female artists too, but it’s far less common. So i’ll stick with them.

“Pick me” mentality . As a trans man I can admit that I don’t fall into the category of “most men” but I can definitely acknowledge when someone is right, and he is correct , men in the industry are 9/10 times rude and don’t feel like the person their tattooing is “good enough” for them to tattoo, Leading to bad work and bad life long tattoos

you as a trans person claiming that gender has nothing to do with ppls behavior is actually wild work. the gender we are assigned at birth absolutely influences our character and our gender expression intersects with it. i feel way more comfortable and safer with women or queer people to get tattoos. in my experience women/queer own shops emphasize creating a safe, comfortable space and have an emphasis on consent. it’s naive to say gender makes no difference. the way those amab are socialized and conditioned by society does not prioritize considering others like it does for AFABs. that’s just facts.

i genuinely think that you got caught up in a "not all men because not me" mentality. i go to all female artists unless i HEAVILY HEAVILY HEAVILY vet a man. let your work speak for itself. if people dont want to go to you dont tell them they should.

Maybe but as someone who was an apprentice and very much in the tattoo scene, it’s also not uncommon for people to prefer female artists because their experiences with male artists they had a “heavy hand”. But it also might just be like a psychological placebo I guess. Some people feel safer and more comfortable with women.🤷♀️

I love this take! But also I think the video being a satire joke is really important to acknowledge. I think you know that but the comment discourse seems like people trying to remind you that or enforce the OPs joke as serious cautionary advice. Which isn’t bad but to me personally the ops video isn’t necessarily a gender commentary joke but more so a narrative of toxic masculinity and really gross tattoo artists who created that boys club. Where as women aren’t always part of that in the tattoo community. Obviously a LGBT+ artist might not always fall into that realm and deserve support. It falls back to the advice you provide here in this video and a “proceed with caution” mentality.

I think people have a hard time with nuance. I agree with the “most of the time I feel safer with __” statements because well that is an opinion lol and also if we let perceived gender bias run our lives we aren’t guaranteed anything (safety, care, ect.) this reminds me of argueing on tumblr in 2006 trying to explain that feminism benefits everyone 😩 they just don’t get it

I have 8 tattoos. 6 of them were done by men and I had shitty experiences. They had amazing portfolios, their work was great and they had decent references but they were all assholes. Last two tattoos were done by a female and night a day difference. Pretty sure it’s men….
