Finnish police have launched a criminal investigation into a Google subsidiary for allegedly clearing forest land before completing required environmental impact assessments. Google's subsidiary, Tuike Finland, clear-cut and drained 330 hectares (approx. 815 acres) of forest land near the town of Muhos in northern Finland. The clear-cutting began before mandatory environmental impact assessments (EIAs) were finalized, violating local environmental and water management regulations. Conservationists estimate that 250,000 trees were felled at the Muhos site, with another 150,000 cut down at a secondary site in Otanmäki. The land clearing stripped away topsoil, leaving the area barren and causing runoff issues into local water sources. Finland's Supervisory Agency (SVV) issued a halt order on the preparatory construction on October 6, 2026. The Oulu Police Department opened a formal environmental degradation investigation shortly after. Antti Järvinen, Google's country manager for Finland, issued an apology and stated that the company had acted based on its best understanding of the legislation at the time. The case has triggered significant public backlash and a national petition in Finland demanding stricter oversight of mega-scale data center projects.
