@wearedigitaldiplomacy: Do you agree with President Donald Trump’s White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt when she recently referred to her own generation — Gen Z — and young American voters as being born with a silver spoon in their mouth? Referring to younger Democratic voters who support candidates like Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a reporter told Leavitt: “Some of these kids, and I call them kids because they are in their twenties and have never had real jobs, and they’re complaining things are expensive. Yes, things are expensive when you don’t have a real job.” The reporter then asked Leavitt — who is 28 years old and a member of Gen :, “Do you think that’s getting traction? Complaining?” Leavitt, who just came back to the White House after maternity leave, stated: “Unfortunately, I do, because this generation, my generation, I hate to say it, Gen Z and those younger than me have been raised with just silver spoons in their mouths, just getting everything handed to them. That’s not the values this country was built on.” She continued: “It was built on meritocracy and hard work, pulling up your sleeves, pulling yourself up from your bootstraps, and achieving the American dream, and we need to protect it with all we’ve got.” When the reporter asked her if the problem was laziness, Leavitt replied, “a little bit,” adding, “It’s laziness, and it’s the liberal indoctrination,” before criticizing the public education system and praising homeschooling and private education. What a crock. Calling young people “silver spoon” because they’re complaining about prices is rich coming from a political class that keeps pretending wages, rent, healthcare, groceries, insurance, and housing costs are still living in 1985. This country loves to preach “meritocracy” until you notice who actually gets ahead: people with family money, connections, inherited stability, political access, and a safety net. Hard work matters, obviously, but hard work doesn’t magically make rent affordable, erase student debt, lower grocery prices, fix healthcare costs, or turn a $17/hr job into homeownership. The American Dream didn’t die because young people got lazy. It died because the people lecturing everyone about “bootstraps” helped build an economy where working full time still isn’t enough for millions of people. So spare us the silver spoon speech. A lot of people aren’t asking for handouts. They’re asking why working your ass off doesn’t buy what it used to.
