@mordecaimuriisa: Anita Among's fall from power is becoming one of the most dramatic political reversals in Uganda's recent history. The Teso Parliamentary Group has now appealed to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to intervene, citing the former Speaker's deteriorating health and prolonged confinement. Among remains under house arrest and that her bank accounts have been frozen, leaving her unable to access funds to run her businesses, including a school, or even meet her personal financial obligations. No one should be denied necessary medical care. If Anita Among requires treatment, she deserves to receive it. But her situation also raises a difficult question. When she occupied one of the most powerful offices in Uganda, countless citizens pleaded for justice, equal treatment, and respect for their rights. Many opposition politicians, activists, and ordinary Ugandans complained of arbitrary arrests, detention, and abuses, yet those voices often went unanswered. Today, the woman who once presided over Parliament finds herself appealing for the very compassion, fairness, and due process that so many others said they were denied. Power is temporary. Justice should never be. In this commentary, I examine Anita Among's dramatic fall from political power, why her allies are now pleading with Museveni to intervene, and why many Ugandans believe her current predicament is a reminder that the rule of law and human dignity should apply equally to everyone—whether powerful or powerless.
