@tilscience: This is why science is the GOAT. I’m officially a super fan of SpudCell. Scientists at the University of Minnesota just built a cell entirely from nonliving chemical components and then watched it grow, replicate its DNA, and divide. A complete cell cycle for the first time in history. No one has ever gotten a synthetic cell to divide before. This news is making big waves in the scientific community in both directions. For example, the paper was submitted to the journal Cell, but was rejected with one of the reviewers stating that SpudCells “weren’t real biology.” But here’s what IS true: for the first time, a fully defined chemical system, where every single molecule is known, executed a complete cell cycle. Chemical components were induced to become biology, in a lab, on purpose. And Adamala is releasing all 190 pages of her methodology and data so any synthetic biologist in the world can build their own. #Science #biology #mindblown #breakingnews

Not to rain on the biological parade, but hasn't sci-fi been warning us for literally hundreds of years that giving humans the ability to create artificial life is a bad idea? Don't get me wrong, it's really cool, but the potential is worrying

SpudCell is impressive, but “from scratch” is only true in the sense that they assembled parts together, not in the sense that every major cell function was built from scratch atom by atom. For example, the ribosomes were taken from E. coli bacteria, and those ribosomes are already complex biological machines needed for protein synthesis. It also depended on supplied enzymes, tRNAs, lipids, energy molecules, and feeder liposomes. So a more accurate description is that it was bottom-up assembled from existing biological components, not fully de novo.

This isn’t life from nothing. It’s utilising already existing materials to simulate life. Crazy impressive though

No, it proves intelligence is needed to create life. Spud cell did not create itself. Besides, you need to first assemble it atom by atom, before assembling the visible components to create the cell.

Everybody is saying that this proves evolution when this actually is closer to proving pan spermia or intelligent design

Scientists built it! How does this prove life doesn’t come from life!

so it means non-living makes living and it proofs intelligence and intention = creator
