WebSockets keep a single connection open between your app and the server, so the server can push new data the instant it happens, instead of your app asking "any news?" every couple of seconds. The old way (HTTP polling): the client asks, the server answers, repeat forever. Most of those requests come back with nothing. Wasted calls, wasted battery, and updates that always land a beat late (~1900ms here). The WebSocket upgrade ("101 Switching Protocols") drops the back-and-forth and opens one two-way lane. Now it's full-duplex: client and server can both send whenever they want, no asking required. Latency drops from ~1900ms to ~2ms. That's why live chat, multiplayer games, trading tickers, and collaborative editors all run on WebSockets, not polling.
