One of my colleagues is on sabbatical and he’s currently on the planning committee for the Olympics.

I used mine to catch up on writing articles about completed research and to start new research projects in settings away from my home institution.

I always think of someone on sabbatical as sitting by the sea writing a book 😂

I think some of the vacation idea comes from tech companies giving what they call sabbaticals for one or two months and basically they are vacations

I'll add one small tip. I have just finished my third sabbatical. When you are interviewing for your tenure-track job, pay careful attention to whether you have a union contract or a non-union contract. In my system, sabbaticals are guaranteed every seventh year. The sabbatical plans are subject to a rigorous set of requirements but cannot be denied based on the whims of a dean or faculty politics. Contrast that with my mentor in graduate school, who eventually became a full professor but was denied sabbatical at least once. And she is a goat in her field. Pay attention to the details. It's cool to call yourself a professor at a cocktail party, but if you have a crappy contract, then who cares? Then you are just a bright person with a lot of degrees who is paid poorly.

That’s interesting, I’m in engineering and took my sabbatical this past March (after 8 yrs in the company). I did nothing but worked on fun projects for a month. We definitely don’t get more than 2 months though.

I would love a sabbatical as a policy advocate and leader. I would love time to do big picture thinking and reading (maybe also do some writing)

A lot of corporations have these too! I took one at a former job. It was every 5 years and we could apply. Mine was spent on a yacht touring southern France and meeting with media in different countries.

I decided to plan a “self funded sabbatical” if I happen to get laid off. Eventually I did get laid off and I had a plan. I rolled out my own business and never went back to work. Be ready!

Almost every academic I know who takes sabbatical uses that time to work on publishing (books or articles or studies)

R1s give junior faculty sabbaticals as well, very important for the kind of productivity required for tenure. Also, at most (but not all) R1s some form of sabbatical is automatic for senior faculty, with only pro forma applications. At the most elite, it comes every six semesters (after every two and a half years of teaching). Most other places, every 14 semesters (after seven years)
