@tatyanaaboutart: Think Mark Rothko’s paintings are just rectangles of colour? Here’s how to read one, and why people have cried standing in front of his work. #arttiktok #arttips #markrothko #howtotiktok
The Rothko Chapel in Houston brought me to tears. I can’t explain how it felt.

I have never had an experience like I did at the Rothko chapel. I could have stayed for hours. one day I will return without any other appointments

His artwork is something you can't experience on a screen and that goes for almost every non-digital artwork.

I saw the one at the Tate in London and I thought I was going to 💩 my pants. I felt like I was standing in front of a portal. It was fkn crazy.

Thanks for this explanation. I may never see one face to face, but at least now understand his intentions better

Ironically, I feel like looking at a Rothko is similar to waiting for your eyes to adjust to the dark night. Once they do, an entire scape reveals itself.

If Rothko has no haters, I am dead. I don’t doubt that plenty of people genuinely love his work and have had profound experiences with them. I just don’t get it

You don’t view a Rothko. You breathe it in.

I’ve seen once a painting and it was stunning. Pictures of them can never give you the same feeling.

One of his paintings was the same colors as a blanket I always wrapped myself up in when I was sick as a child. Seeing it brought me so much comfort.

The first time I stood in front of a Rothko at the Guggenheim, I started tearing up. A profound experience for a younger me. A terrifying and spiritual awakening.

I guess I’ll have to revisit MoMA. I was there 15 years ago. Loved every minute of being there. Don’t remember Rothko though. Bummer. You and Simon Schama have convinced me to view his works again. Love your content.

I've seen a few of his works but never really understood them until now. Thank you for the insight to appreciate them as the artist intended.

Why - and I say this as someone with a robust understanding of modernism - DOESN’T EVERY MODERN GALLERY SUGGEST YOU HOW TO LOOK AT AN ARTIST’S WORK?
