Prior to Angli-Norman invasion of Ireland in the 12th century, Ireland was decentralised, made up of competing regional kingdoms (not dissimilar to how England was before it was unified). One could argue Ireland only first existed as a single politically unified kingdom under British rule. This doesn't discount the distinct Irish cultural identity prior to being unified. Not should this discount the current modern day belief many Irish feel (both sides of the border) for a single unified country. Slightly ironic that this vision of a single politically unified Ireland is itself a product of invasion and forced centralisation.
