Painter John William Waterhouse brought this story to life across three paintings. A woman, imprisoned alone on a small island in the middle of a river. Cursed never to look directly out of her window at the world outside. No one knew why. Not even she herself. And so she simply wove — a tapestry of the world reflected in her mirror. People passing along the riverbank, knights riding by — all nothing more than shadows in the glass. Then one day, a knight appeared in the mirror. Gleaming armor. The sound of his singing drifting across the water. Before she knew it, she had looked — directly out of the window. The mirror cracked from side to side.
