I’m German American. A true hybrid, bilingual, spent half my life there and in the US. I say “I love you” allllll the time (still) to my German relatives. It makes them feel hella awkward but I don’t care, because I DO love them!

I guess I never wondered why my boyfriend says ich hab dich lieb to his mom but ich liebe dich to me, I assume it's more of a familial/friendly way to say it and actually saying i love you was for your partner 🤷♀️

Yeah I hate that take. I’m German and I love having a distinction between familial love and romantic love, it doesn’t make it any less powerful. It’s actually one of the things I love about the language
