Everything is “as he should” and “bare minimum” but also “I don’t owe anyone anything”

“ as you should” is mandatory boundary set and is also used differently in AAVE

People think appreciating “bare minimum” means your standards are low and it’s so weird. I think they forget it’s also bare minimum and just basic human kindness to say thank you

ppl seem to think the “bare minimum” does not cut both ways. appreciating ur partner’s effort and expressing thanks is itself a pretty basic facet of a healthy relationship.

do people not realize that their partners also deserve a loving partner who goes above and beyond? saying thank you and being appreciative for the small acts of kindness is the bare minimum

Also: just because something is what someone SHOULD do doesn’t mean it doesn’t still require effort and intention to do it. And it’s just nice to acknowledge that and make sure your partner knows it’s appreciated.

I've personally never dealt with this and I'm pretty sure it's just a nothing burger internet argument. BUT. Positive reinforcement will always be much more effective than borderline punishment for the correct action right?

The thing is a lot of people will have the "as they should" mindset without ever realizing the complimentary "as I should". they opened the door for me "as they should" so I said thank you "as I should" it's basically just the golden rule with extra exposition.

its also like. you would want to be thanked and appreciated for doing nice things! I dont expect a thank you when i hold doors open but i do appreciate it! why wouldnt i express that appreciation to others!

They forget the other side of the equation, you get taken care of, then you take care of your person too. it's give and take. not take, take, take and give when you feel like it.

to me I see this as a nice thing to do versus an expectation. I'm almost always going to hold the door open for anyone, strangers loved ones no matter what. Now if you tell me to open the door for you, I'm closing it in your face. I don't have to do this. I'm doing this to be polite.

I used to have this battle at work constantly, yes that may be what they are 'supposed' to do, but REWARD THE BEHAVIOR YOU WANT TO SEE REPEATED. You definitely don't want to punish them for it.
