I honestly feel like the parents are victims in this situation. From what I understand, Elizabeth kept having children year after year, and as parents, they probably felt they couldn’t just turn their backs on their son or their grandchildren. I think they eventually gave in and grew overwhelmed. At the end of the day, the primary responsibility for raising all 16 children should have been Elizabeth and their son, since they’re the children’s parents. Grandparents can help, but they shouldn’t be expected to take over the role of raising that many kids.Looking at the photos, the parents just seem like ordinary people to me. None of us really know what was happening behind closed doors or how much pressure they were under. And if Elizabeth’s family has a history of crime or instability, that may have contributed to the situation, but it doesn’t automatically mean the grandparents were responsible for everything that happened.
