This extreme thermal environment caused the entire aircraft to physically expand and stretch by several inches while airborne.The Mechanics of Thermal ExpansionAirframe Growth: According to Skunk Works metallurgists, a fully heat-soaked Blackbird airframe expanded by roughly 1.95 to over 3 inches in overall length during high-speed cruise.Engine & Nacelle Expansion: The massive Pratt & Whitney J58 engines expanded even more aggressively due to internal combustion temperatures reaching up to 3,200°F within the afterburner. The engine assemblies grew by up to 6 inches in length and expanded significantly in diameter.The Fuel Tank Dilemma: Because no flexible sealing material could survive these extreme temperature swings, the fuel tanks were built with intentional structural gaps. As a result, the aircraft notoriously leaked JP-7 fuel on the tarmac.
