It would say it depends where you are. In my case my mum told me is rude assist a meal empty handed. So it's dessert, vine , or a gift

Australian here: it's actually pretty common for parks to have barbecues/grills available, so often our barbecue parties will have people bringing their own meat and sides to share as a group, with the person who planned bringing extra meats and such, but that might just be my state/class

This is why people don’t host events anymore. We are the only ones in our friend group with a house for hosting, and we’re not footing the bill every party.

Asking to bring sides “if you want” is not rude

As a fellow Aussie, it is perfectly normal to bring something to events like this. I have always assumed to bring something, so bake something and bring something sweet or grab some chips and drinks.

6 families plus the host family, that's a lot of people to feed, potluck makes sense

I grew up being told that coming empty handed was rude. My mom always asked if the host wanted us to bring something even if it’s just paper plates or plastic silverware

Maybe it is a cultural thing for them, but if this person is american, a potluck is one of the most common ways to celebrate.

So, OP isn’t DEMANDING their guests bring their own food, they merely offered it?…

Whenever I have a birthday party or I throw a Halloween party or really anything and I’m having people at my house, all my friends are nerodivergent and we all have particular taste so I always ask all of them to bring a snack to share so they’ll have at least one snack for them to eat.

In Brazil when you’re invited to a barbecue you typically are expected to bring something. Some meat or sausage or a side, and usually some drinks. It’s a moment for community, not a dinner party

Going to my girlfriends family bbq this weekend, we were told to bring a side. I feel that’s standard practice, the host makes the meats (runs the grill) and provides beer and other people bring the small things.

Not a cultural thing - if this is a group event that happens frequently, we start a group chat and tell everyone what we’re bringing. Someone brings drink, someone brings dessert etc.

I feel like it’s just nice to bring something. Doesn’t have to be homemade, just food.

in South Africa, a braai (similar to BBQ) you bring your own meat always. a dessert too if you want to show off. but you ALWAYS bring your own meat unless told otherwise. then we host the salads (4 or 5 types) and dessert. meat is the most expensive part, that's why we do it backwards. also means people won't be left out as they pick their own and know what they like

Everytime we BBQ with friends everyone brings what they want to eat. We of course share but the responsibility on bringing the food isn't on only one person
