@autismcoachcarter: Constipation is common in autistic children, but the reason isn’t always what parents think. Sometimes it’s sensory, sometimes it’s anxiety, and sometimes it’s the unfamiliar feeling of letting something leave their body. My daughter refuses to use the toilet. She only poops in the pull-up 😩

My son wouldn’t poop at home, had to take him to Home Depot to poop. That was a fun summer. We’re good at home now.

I'm in the potty training phase with my 5yo now. he successfully goes #1 in toilet with no issues and no accidents. now #2 is a different story. he's VERY regular (maybe too regular hahah) but will not poop in the bathroom = accidents galore.

We learned at an ASD parenting workshop that it may be the water splashing back after the drop that could be causing sensory overload!!!!🤭🤯 blew my mind

My 14 yo has had to have a suppository to poop every other day for years now. But the only solution anyone gives me is give him miralax. But he won’t take it because of the taste/feel in his drink then he stops drinking for days because of it.

I can relate to this more than most people realize. My nonverbal autistic daughter struggled with severe stool withholding for years, which eventually led to encopresis. Despite years of MiraLAX, specialists, and constant medical care, she would only have a bowel movement in the bathtub from about age 3 until she was 12. She was even hospitalized to finally resolve the impaction. It was one of the hardest things we've ever gone through as a family. Thankfully, she's now 26 and no longer struggles with it. To any parent going through this, you're not alone, and there is hope. ❤️

Mine wouldn’t from day 1. Spent years advocating for him because all doctors would do is insist I wasn’t giving him enough miralax 😡 we did all the exorcises, miralax (even though it made him triggered), etc. it wasn’t until his third year in the emergency room that they recommended a specialist who gave us the right combo to keep him regular

mine is 11 and STILL in pull ups. he gets constipated every other week bc he only drinks chocolate milk and root beer. we've started adding a really good powder to his milk that keeps him regular, however the potty training is still a nightmare. plz help

I have heard that blowing bubbles while on toilet and making sure feet are high enough can help.

Yep. I had to learn this and tip toe walking doesn’t make it any better because it tightens their glutes. But when it was time baby it was on 🙌🏽🙌🏽🫶🏽

My son does this, was told it’s a sensory issue, he doesn’t like the feeling of it happened so he holds it as long as he can, his stools are so hard, I’ve been advised to give him a stool softener
