And yes, it is exactly as painful as it looks. An ankle dislocation happens when the bones that form the ankle are forced completely out of alignment — usually from a high impact fall, a sports collision, or a car accident. When it happens, the ligaments tear, the soft tissue is destroyed, and what was a stable joint seconds ago becomes a medical emergency. The reduction has to happen fast. The longer a dislocated joint stays out of place, the more damage is done to the surrounding nerves, blood vessels, and tissue. So as brutal as this looks — getting it back in is the most important thing that can happen in that moment. And this is just step one.
