I believed this for most of my life without ever checking it. You die. Your soul goes to heaven. You live there forever. End of story. I heard it at funerals, in churches, and in songs so often that I assumed those exact words must be somewhere in the Bible. Then I actually went looking. And what I found gave me more hope, not less. The great hope running through the New Testament isn't merely dying and escaping to heaven. It is resurrection. Jesus said: "The hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth." John 5:28–29. The graves are not the end. Jesus calls the dead out. Paul spends almost an entire chapter defending this truth: "The dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." 1 Corinthians 15:52. Then he says: "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death." 1 Corinthians 15:26. Death doesn't get the final word. Christ does. When Paul comforts grieving Christians in 1 Thessalonians 4, notice where he points them. Christ's return. "The Lord himself shall descend from heaven... and the dead in Christ shall rise first." 1 Thessalonians 4:16. There it is again. Resurrection. Daniel had already prophesied: "Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake." Daniel 12:2. But here is what really changed how I read Scripture. The Bible doesn't end with God's people permanently leaving earth for heaven. John sees: "the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven." Revelation 21:2. Coming down. Then heaven announces: "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them." Revelation 21:3. We talk constantly about going where God is. Scripture ends with God dwelling with His people. Now somebody is already reaching for Philippians 1:23. Good. Read it. Paul desires "to depart, and to be with Christ." Read 2 Corinthians 5:8. Read Jesus speaking to the thief about paradise in Luke 23:43. Those passages matter. Christians disagree about exactly what happens between an individual's death and the resurrection. But whatever conclusion you reach about that intermediate state, Scripture still points forward. Resurrection. Christ returning. Death destroyed. Creation renewed. God dwelling with humanity. Romans 8 says creation itself "shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption." Romans 8:21. Peter speaks of "new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness." 2 Peter 3:13. And God declares: "Behold, I make all things new." Revelation 21:5. Maybe we have spent so long preaching about leaving that we stopped preaching about what Christ is returning to accomplish. The gospel is bigger than: "Believe so you can go somewhere nice when you die." Jesus conquered the grave. And because His resurrection matters, ours matters. Paul writes: "If there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen." 1 Corinthians 15:13. That's how central resurrection is. So don't believe me. Open the Book. Read John 5. Read Romans 8. Read 1 Corinthians 15. Read 1 Thessalonians 4. Read Revelation 21. Then ask yourself: Why did Jesus and the apostles spend so much time teaching resurrection if dying and remaining in heaven forever was supposed to be the ending? Maybe the Christian hope isn't escaping what God created. Maybe it is Christ defeating what corrupted it. Sin judged. Death destroyed. The dead raised. Creation made new. The King returning. God dwelling with His people. That isn't less glorious than heaven. It's bigger. So here's the question I wish somebody had asked me years ago: If heaven after death is the finish line, why does Scripture keep pointing beyond death to resurrection? #BibleStudy #Resurrection #Heaven #Jesus #BibleTruth
