My first year, my principal told me I had two goals. Make sure they were fed and I knew how everybody was getting home. The rest was icing on the cake.

I start the morning very low key with some coloring and get to know you games. We do procedures HEAVILY the first two weeks and practice them. I also have them do an all about me activity and then we talk about procedures again🫣😅. Don’t skimp on the procedures!

My BEST advice! - Day one and on: BE STERN, STRICT, FAIR, and FOLLOW THROUGH whether is be with expectations, rules, punishments, rewards. Never get lazy with what you expect of them. They will get lazy with you. Good luck!!!!

Here’s what I do 1) get the kid into class don’t have them unpack 2) i introduced myself and I keep it a little like struck I lay down my 3 most important rules of class which is being safe reasonable and respectful. Then they share how to be all those things. 3) then I’ll let out a laugh tell them they gonna have a good year and the kids introduced themselves and we play the name game after, 4) they unpack there stuff put it away 5) we practice going to the bathroom, lining up, how to make lunch choice, and other classroom rules, and end the day w some games (heads up 7 up, 4 corners) and then at the very end I take pictures of them for their first day of school, by that time schools over LOL cuz day one is a half day for us

Read a first day of school book! I read First Day Jitters and we talked about all the feelings we may be feeling on the first day and did an anchor chart where everyone “graphed” how they were feeling. I also did a tour of the classroom and school and talked about expectations for different areas (like walking in the hallway). Go over rules/procedures of course but also have some fun with community building games!
