In 1990, Robert Bly said something most people still don't understand about men: When there are no older men to guide them, boys try to figure out manhood on their own. And it doesn't work. For most of history, a boy wasn't left to guess what it meant to be a man. He was welcomed into it. By older men. By mentors. By people who had already walked the path. That process was called initiation. And when that disappears, something else takes its place: Confusion. Anger. Posturing. You see it in gangs. You see it in friend groups. What is strength? How much pain should I endure? What does it mean to be a man? And no one in the room actually knows. That frustration doesn't come from nowhere. It comes from absence. From not having a man who sees you, challenges you, and calls you forward. This isn't about blaming fathers. Because as Bly points out, fathers alone also can't initiate.
