In the Soviet Union, our journey into the Siberian wilderness had only just begun, but the real adventure started the moment we stepped beyond the last traces of civilization. After several freezing days aboard a Soviet train, where the heating failed, drunken passengers filled the carriage, and transport police came dangerously close to discovering what we were carrying, we finally reached Severobaikalsk. There, an old friend of Maksimych's father welcomed us into his wooden home, fed us a simple but unforgettable Siberian dinner, and warned us that the taiga was far less forgiving than we imagined. Before dawn, he drove us for hours through endless snow-covered forests in his battered Soviet truck until the road simply ended. He shook each of our hands, wished us luck, and disappeared back toward civilization, leaving the three of us completely alone in one of the wildest places in the Soviet Union. The first day of the expedition went better than we could have hoped. We crossed the silent taiga on our military skis, followed our old maps, and by evening set up our first camp beneath towering spruce trees. A hot meal, a crackling fire, and the warmth of our canvas tent made it feel as though the wilderness had accepted us. But that feeling didn't last long. In the middle of the night, I woke to complete silence inside the tent. Then came the first wolf's howl. A second answered from the other side of the clearing. Then a third... and a fourth. Before long, an entire pack had surrounded our camp beneath the frozen Siberian moon. Lying awake in the darkness, listening to the wolves calling to one another just beyond the canvas walls, I realized for the first time that we had gone far beyond the point where anyone could come to save us.
