On December 26, 1973, President Richard Nixon boarded a regularly scheduled United Airlines DC-10 commercial flight from Washington Dulles to Los Angeles instead of using Air Force One. The flight was heavily publicized as a gesture of solidarity and energy conservation during the 1973 OPEC oil embargo, when Americans were facing severe gas shortages and high prices. By flying commercial and leaving the fuel-heavy presidential jet at home, Nixon intended to show the public that he was sharing the burden. During the flight, he walked the aisles and chatted with surprised passengers. However, the gesture was also widely viewed as a political stunt, as an empty Air Force One still had to follow behind him to handle his return trip and transport secure communications gear. To date, this remains the only time a sitting U.S. president has flown on a regularly scheduled commercial airliner.
