@vethernarian: I recently had a pet owner get turned away at THE GATE because the airline wanted a certificate signed within fewer days than the country they were traveling to. The paperwork for the country was all completed correctly, but the airline wanted something different and at the last minute rejected the pet. With international pet travel on the rise, there has to be a better way to regulate what is required and create consistency with timelines for pet owners and veterinarians trying to complete paperwork. #veterinarian #vettech #vetmed
I had an owner schedule an appt for an IHC at 1 pm on the same day her flight was at 5pm. I was like “maam that’s not gonna work”

Our vet doesn’t like doing them for this reason then we get blamed so she charges 1k for the paperwork and people STILL book with her for it

We have a company that we work with. If the client doesn’t go through this company for their health certificate paperwork, then we aren’t signing anything.

I was a vet nurse moving from the US to Australia (very strict bec they’re rabies free) for Vet school and did the entire Health Cert and flight arrangement for my cat on my own w out a company. Took entire years off my life making sure I didn’t miss any steps and followed the timeline exactly

I had almost the same issue bc the rabies vaccine had to be given at least 30 days prior to travel and it had been 40 days prior to travel and she said she wasn’t sure because it was more than 30 days ago. Meanwhile the regulation and paperwork said rabies vaccinated at least 30 days. I said 40 days is more than 30 days. It took hours to get the cat approved for travel at check in and thank goodness the lady was there so many hours early.

These are not worth doing. Just let the USDA certification expire - natural Lexapro.

This is the same with Grenada. Grenada requires 2-3 weeks. Health cert says 21 days. But Grenada also requires an import permit approved within 2 weeks of travel BUT have to have health cert endorsed before sending it to Grenada to request the import permit to be signed by ministry of agriculture. BUT airlines all have different health cert limitations. American Airlines says no more than 10 days. Delta doesn’t have a limit so follow country regulations. So always ask what airline, follow vax protocol and doc submission that the country of import says but dates of health cert by airline.

I got so much anxiety just scheduling these. let alone watching the Dr and VA jump through all the hoops to ultimately cross their fingers and hope

We don’t do them anymore at all where I work, such a nightmare, most the time the clients don’t know what’s going on, and then things like this at the gateee😭😭

Had this as well. I had to do another health certificate and owner had to pay another fee. The airline ended up reimbursing the cost of changing the flight and the new fees since it was their employee that should have allowed the pet on as everything was correct!

I’ve done certs to Jordan, Costa Rica, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Japan, and dozens to different states in the US, and I HATE THEM ALL! 9/10 it’s “I need a certificate for my dog that hasn’t had vaccines in 5yrs, and I’m leaving on American Airlines to Germany in the middle of July, oh and they’ll be in cargo, and we’re leaving Friday” and it’s currently Wednesday.

Genuinely so much depends on the gate agents and staff on the airline it's wild and incredibly stressful.

I do these every day. This was your screwup either way you either didn’t call the airline to confirm what they needed or you didn’t escalate it high enough with airline management.

We had a patient stuck in a different country because the USDA changed the requirements for re-entry. Our vet spent HOURS on the phone that day, but we got her home!

IHCs are the bane of my existence. I work at a combo ER/GP place (ER only after a certain time) and i had someone scream at me on the phone bc they were at the airport with their cat and needed an IHC and they were very upset that i told them it was going to be impossible to get one in such short time for multiple reasons (it was 8pm, she was at the gate for her flight, and my ER doctors do not do health certs) I really wish my place did not do them at all bc they are an absolute headache, the process is so complex most people struggle to follow it even though it is their responsibility to, and then the additional rules imposed by various airlines. it all sucks and i am happy that i am primarily in the back and no longer have to answer calls about them😂

We stopped doing them.
1) I was the only one doing them. It burned me out.
2) Once the USDA started requiring that HCs be submitted at least 3 business days prior, it became challenging to meet timelines requirements with an already limited doctor schedule (we only have 2 accredited vets with changing schedules).
3) The CDC started requiring extra stuff which meant flmore work. That was the cherry on top! We said no more. We now only offer domestic CVIs.
FYI - the airline can require HCs in less time and that overrules the destination country requirement. Most airlines are 10 days. We always tell clients, it is our responsibility to compelte the paperwork and ensure destination requirements are met. Its YOUR (client's) responsibility to confirm airline travel requirements and let us know ahead of time if any of their requirements need us to shoft things around.
There are far too many airlines and we are not travel agents to know every one of their requirements.
