@audhdunmasked40s: Looking back at my old school reports has been emotional. So many of the comments that were written about me as a child now make complete sense through the lens of a late autism diagnosis. This isn’t about blaming teachers. It’s about recognising how differently autism—especially in girls—was understood, and how many of us were praised for masking instead of being recognised for struggling. I’d love to know… what did your school reports say? #autism #latediagnosed #women #school #traits
Heavy on the “I didn’t want to be seen.” 😳 My school reports always said the same 3 things you mentioned. Also, I loved to read, but every time an oral book report was scheduled for that day, I would be terrified. Even though I would somehow get through them, I would still feel the same every single time. Another thing was the that I didn’t really understand the concept of studying. I made excellent grades but didn’t study. I was also put in the gifted program, and that attracted unwanted attention and other kids deciding that I thought I was special when I really just felt like an alien. I was a super quiet kid. I was just constantly watching others and analysing behaviours trying to crack the code of social interactions. I became good enough at it to have a group of friends in high school, but that eventually collapsed because the never ending process of taking in the feedback about my “quirks” that would be pointed out, and practicing correcting those things in private… well, I just couldn’t do it fast enough to keep up appearances sometimes. And that pretty much sums up how I’ve lived most of my life until I found out I’m AuDHD. Now I’m trying to understand that unmasking is so important and how masking for so long has negatively impacted my health. I feel so better now than I ever have and I wish that for every one of us that have gone through life like this.

Literally every point you made was me at school. My reports were almost identical to yours. Not diagnosed but pretty sure I’m ADHD & autistic. What I find sad is that whist every teacher documented that I needed to speak up more, not one of them ever offered a way to try a suppprt me do just that 😢

“A pleasure to teach. She’s a quiet, conscious student who would benefit from speaking up more in class” every year from primary to leaving school. Not diagnosed but I’m struggling

they used to pick on me to answer questions in class because I'd never put my hand up even when I knew the answer. I was always described as quiet and shy. I had selective mutism in school

Also, the need to process things slower so often you wouldn’t contribute because you would be still thinking about things and working them out and wanting to plan your answer by the time you’ve done that the class had moved on.

I heard throughout my entire education that I was just shy and quiet and lacked confidence all the while eating the exact same thing for my packed lunch for nearly 16 years straight and always wanting to wear my blue socks or I'd get upset of which my mum got me nearly 20 pairs of so I was happy

Do you find that because you have always observed more you’re a very good reader of people & their behavior, or is that just me!!

I’m not diagnosed but snap snap snap everything you said - what really stuck out from what you said is all the energy I would put into staying under the radar. Being seen was my worst fear at Secondary school - but of course I was ‘a pleasure to have in class’. I feel failed by that school and teachers in a way that makes me so sad.

I was so upset when I read my old reports. Most were so judgemental of me as a child

Not diagnosed and much older but the school reports were very similar. Was always afraid of getting things wrong and watched the whole time to see how I should act and masked very young to feel part of a group 💞

My school reports are hilarious. I always always always got ‘could do better’!! I mean what does that even mean. Surely everyone could do better in some ways!? I always laugh at mine 😂😂😂

I had the exact same and I put so much blame on myself for it and that I should be acting different but after a late diagnosis I’ve learnt to forgive myself and that it wasn’t my fault all along as it’s just how I’m naturally programmed to be.
