@howareyou_bbg4: based The Siege of Jerusalem in 1187 was one of the defining moments of the medieval Crusades and marked the triumphant return of the holy city to Muslim rule under the leadership of Saladin, founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. Following his decisive victory over the Crusader forces at the Battle of Hattin, where much of the Kingdom of Jerusalem's army was destroyed and its leaders captured, Saladin rapidly advanced across the Holy Land, reclaiming city after city with little resistance. By late September 1187, Jerusalem—the spiritual heart of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism—stood isolated and surrounded. The city's defense was entrusted to Balian of Ibelin, who organized a desperate defense despite having only a small force of knights and newly armed civilians. On 20 September, Saladin's army laid siege to the city, bombarding its walls with siege engines while sappers attempted to undermine the fortifications. After several days of fierce fighting, the attackers shifted their assault to a weaker section of the walls, eventually breaching the defenses and leaving the city's defenders with little hope of victory. Recognizing that continued resistance would only lead to unnecessary bloodshed, Balian entered negotiations with Saladin. Although the sultan initially demanded an unconditional surrender, he ultimately agreed to generous terms that allowed most inhabitants to ransom themselves and leave the city safely, while many of the poor who could not afford the ransom were also freed through acts of mercy by Saladin and his commanders. On 2 October 1187, nearly eighty-eight years after it had been captured during the Siege of Jerusalem of the First Crusade, Jerusalem peacefully surrendered to the Ayyubids. Unlike the massacre that followed the Crusaders' conquest in 1099, Saladin largely prevented widespread killing and looting, ensuring that the city's holy sites were respected and protected. The Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock were purified and restored for Muslim worship, while Christian pilgrims were later permitted to continue visiting the city. The fall of Jerusalem shocked Christian Europe and directly inspired the Third Crusade, bringing famous rulers such as Richard I of England into the conflict. The siege remains one of the most significant events of medieval history, symbolizing both Saladin's military brilliance and his reputation for clemency, while reshaping the balance of power in the Holy Land for generations. this is for educational purposes! explaining history for studying hope this can help you!!!
