𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬. 🏏🎙️ Honoured to be invited onto five BBC radio stations to discuss the @ICC Women’s T20 World Cup alongside my PhD research at Birmingham City University. One of the most important messages I shared is that the challenge isn’t simply getting South Asian girls into cricket- it’s making sure talented players are supported to stay, develop and successfully transition through every stage of the pathway. My research, which has analysed over 4,000 players across the England cricket talent pathway, found that South Asian girls make up 𝟏𝟏.𝟕% 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐠𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥, despite representing 𝟖.𝟒% 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. That’s an encouraging sign that participation is growing. However, by the professional game, representation falls to just 𝟑.𝟑%. These findings challenge outdated stereotypes that South Asian girls are simply not interested in cricket. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Through my research, players have spoken about overlapping barriers including cultural expectations, financial costs, access to high-quality coaching, transport, representation and, at times, feeling like they didn’t truly belong within the cricket system. The Women’s T20 World Cup has reinforced something I strongly believe: visibility changes perceptions. When girls see women competing on the biggest stage, they begin to believe that cricket is a sport where they belong too. But inspiration alone isn’t enough. When a girl wants to join a club after watching the World Cup, there must be somewhere welcoming for her to go and a pathway that supports her long-term development. Major tournaments create the spark—the system has to keep that spark alive. I’m incredibly grateful to the BBC for providing a platform to discuss research that is helping inform conversations around the future of women’s cricket, challenging outdated stereotypes, and highlighting how we can create more inclusive talent pathways.
