Most swimmers who develop shoulder pain take time off and come back expecting it to be fixed. It is not fixed. Because rest does not change the stroke that caused it. Shoulder pain in freestyle almost always comes from one of three places. A thumb-first hand entry that rotates the arm internally at full reach, compressing the shoulder joint on every single stroke. A dropped elbow during the pull that overloads the shoulder instead of the lat. Or a recovery arm that swings wide and low, grinding through a restricted range every cycle. None of these feel dangerous. They feel like normal swimming. And they are. Until they have been repeated enough times that the joint stops tolerating them. A swimmer doing 3000 metres per session takes roughly 2400 strokes. If the entry angle is wrong on every one of those strokes, that is 2400 compressions per session. Rest removes the inflammation. It does not remove the 2400 compressions waiting on the first day back. The fix is to identify which part of the stroke is loading the shoulder incorrectly and change it before returning to full volume. Not after. A short video from the side and front is usually enough to find it. What looks fine from the pool deck often looks completely different from underwater. The shoulder is not the problem. It is just where the problem shows up. Have you dealt with shoulder pain from swimming? What changed when you fixed it? Tell me below.
