The ONLY time a "Midwesterner" talks like that is with someone they knew there whole life, as far as ive found out, living in different parts of it for 30 years now. I used to NEVER have problem making friends growing up. But that was on the East Coast, amongst military kids. SINCE I've moved here, not completely of my own wanting, I've made few friends, and kept even less. And that's because Midwest people may "seem" kind. But are very standoffish. And that's just from MY viewpoint. Its been even worse where I live, in Eastern Iowa. Especially since COVID, and my dad's death.

I'll tell my closest friends, depending on the situation. In my line of work, sometimes people need to know that they are loved and supported....I suspect it is very similar for vets and people that just genuinely care about their friends. You aren't crossing any lines if your friends are accepting of it and if people say you are, tell them to find someone that loves them too.

But you can use other terms "you're amazing," you're the best," "I appreciate you so much." But you don't stop showing love and affection for someone. You just have to know how to differentiate and set limits so as not to confuse. That's why I clarify that I feel like a virtual friend
