If only it was simple as that. Too bad we don't live in a hypothetical world where everyone decides they're just not gonna commit crimes. The human mind is wired in a way that there is always gonna be someone who will act out of line. And you talked about curing them, yeah no. Because the problem with most prisoners are that they don't want help. You can't help someone who doesn't want to be helped. And even if we force people to be treated for those behavioral issues that's just a whole different can of worms of eugenics. The world isn't that innocent. You cannot create a world so innocent, just doesn't work like that dude. Some people are just fucking evil no matter how much you try to treat them or house them or free them. Eventually a system like that will create a weak society that can't rise up in a time of need. Perfect breeding grounds for authoritarianist governments. And the proposal of putting them into secure mental health facilities? That's stupid. If society is locked away behind progression you'll just have s bunch of fakers, and again EUGENICS. Prisons are very necessary. If you have no punishment for breaking a law then you have no laws. Just because the US prison system sucks it doesn't mean we need to abolish all prisons. The stem of the issue is society itself. Look to the Nordic countries as an example. A high trust society means a better prison system where the repeat offenders and serious crimes are punished while also offered rehabilitation for those who want it. And guess how many innocent people have spent the rest of their lives in prison there? ZERO, because the average life sentence term is only 16 years. Guess how many people have been wrongfully executed in the Nordics in the last 4 decades. ZERO, again, because the Nordics don't have capital punishment. It is a system that works better than abolishing prison systems all together and that has already been achieved.

I agree but the terminology choices were a bit off. I wouldn’t use “rational”. Many crimes aren’t calculated and come from impulse and emotion which inherently antithetical to a rational persons process. It could be that the conclusion is similar in some cases but not all. I believe anyone given their life and experience would make the same decision. But no person is purely rational. The existence of emotion prevents it

There is also the argument of a damaged or underdeveloped prefrontal cortex. Our society creates criminals in some circumstances. Incrimination pushes people farther from healing and the ability to function within society
