He composed music meant for their 9,191 ceremonies, music written to accompany something the rest of the world was never meant to see. 166 Out of that world came a piece unlike anything written before it. Satie invented a new word for it: Gnossienne. No time signature, no bar lines, no 374 rules at all, just sound moving freely, the way a ritual might unfold rather than a song. He never explained where the word came from or what it truly meant. He died in 1925, and the mystery went with him.
