Powerful neighbors like the Clan Campbell relentlessly stripped them of their territories around Loch Awe. A decisive victory at the Battle of Glen Fruan in 1603 prompted the Crown to legally ban the MacGregor name. By 1790, frustrated by crowding and looking for fresh land, William Gudger moved his family further west over the mountains into Burke County (which soon became Buncombe County). He bought land along the Swannanoa River, effectively establishing the Gudgers as one of the most prominent pioneer families of Western North Carolina.
