Here’s why: Carbon buildup When an engine is driven gently all the time: * Carbon deposits can accumulate on intake valves, pistons, combustion chambers, and exhaust valves. * Fuel injectors and spark plugs may also accumulate deposits more quickly. A few full-throttle accelerations (once the engine is fully warmed up) raise combustion temperatures and exhaust flow, which can help burn off some deposits. This is sometimes called an “Italian tune-up.”
