she does NOT sense earth in the air. she can anticipate it's trajectory based on where it started vs where it left the earth/her opponents movements.

Right message wrong explanation. In every of those examples Toph sees how the attack is formed and how it's started. If an earth bender moves his arm forward and a rock leaves the ground, she will know where it be based on that. Not because she feels the earth or hears it. Same with the guy in the "air" that is actually on a rope stuck to celing of a house thst is... ON THE GROUND.
