Tre Lowe (@trelowe) has pushed back after a far right commentator said “all talk about is sex” and that it was “literally in their culture”, when referring to Jamaicans. The exchange took place during a GB News segment titled ‘Outcry over migration judge’s ruling’. The on-screen description appeared to refer to the highly publicised case of Oniel Spence. Spence, a 43-year-old Jamaican national, applied in 2023 to join his British wife and child in the UK. The Home Office refused his application because of his 2008 US conviction for a sexual offence involving a 15-year-old girl. A First-tier Tribunal allowed his human rights appeal, but the Court of Appeal later overturned that decision, finding its reasoning flawed, and ordered a fresh hearing. Tre challenged Syntyche Djunga's attempt to use one man’s crimes and sexually suggestive music to disparage an entire nationality, while highlighting the pivotal role Jamaicans and other Caribbean people played in securing rights for Black Britons. “You have no idea how many Jamaicans were instrumental in fighting for the rights of Black people in this country,” he said.
